Last Saturday, I co-hosted a baby shower for Martha. Martha is closing in on 80 and will be a first-time grandma. We thought she deserved the best, and since she’s a teacher (yes, she’s still teaching at 75+) and avid book whisperer, we knew we couldn’t go wrong with a children’s-book-themed party. Guests brought books for soon-to-be-born Leighton Lou, and our food all centered around books. The hostesses can’t claim the cake; it came from Wal-Mart.
The punch corresponded to the book Pinkalicious by Victoria Kann. It’s made with Jello! The color of Jello you choose dictates the color of the punch.
A bowl of multi-colored goldfish crackers is for the book Rainbow Fish by Marcus Phister.
Who wouldn’t want The Stinky Cheese Man at their shower? The book is by Jon Scieszka.
Dr. Seuss would be pleased with these (deviled eggs with bacon sprinkles).
These savory muffins made a delicious mouthful for If You Give a Moose a Muffin by Laura Numeroff.
Big Anthony would love this bowl of pasta. Thanks, Strega Nona (by Tomie DePaola). The recipe for this easy salad will be in my next post.
The only photo we didn’t get was of cocktail weenies in BBQ sauce for the much-loved book Go, Dog. Go! by P.D. Eastman.
Martha was tickled, mom-and-dad-to-be Cadey and Paul were thrilled, and little Leighton Lou will have a ready-made library as soon as she graces the earth with her presence!
